Scribblit – Writing Camp

Co-curricular Camps and Tours
Year 7 Camp
The Year 7 Camp is an important way that students establish a sense of belonging at Warrandyte High School. It is always held in Term 1 in order for students, who come from many different primary schools, to establish and extend friendships. In 2017, students attended the ADANAC Adventure Camp, in Yarra Junction. They were accompanied by the Year 11 VET Sport and Recreation students, who acted as leaders. In 2018 students attended a similar camp in the Kinglake area. In Term One this year, our Year 7 students and teachers returned from our Year 7 camp which this year was in the Halls Gap area. It was hugely successful! The students returned with fun filled stories of awesome activities and stories of all the new friends they made!
Year 9 Urban Adventure
During Term 2 of the Year 9 Taking the Challenge Program students focus on ‘My City’. In this Unit students attend a series of excursions throughout Melbourne, as well as researching an aspect of the city which culminates in a presentation to their parents at an Expo held in Term 3. The opportunity to work in teams on this presentation means that students have a chance to take on more responsibility for their own learning. Some of the city-based activities undertaken throughout the term include a self-guided tour of Federation Square, the amazing race around Melbourne, seminars on homelessness in Melbourne, tours of the MCG and Rod Laver Arena, the Shrine of Remembrance and the Magistrates Court. At the end of the term students also go on a ‘city camp’ where they spend two nights in a CBD hostel.
Writing Camp
Scribblit, student writing. Student voice is alive and well at Warrandyte High School. Students meet fortnightly to write new styles and genres. The best of the work is published in Scribblit, the school’s anthology of student writing.
Kakadu
Year 11 students are given the opportunity to travel to Darwin seeing our wonderful country along the way. This tour is conducted during one week of term and one week of holidays. Our tour leaves Warrandyte High School in the direction of Adelaide, Coober Pedy and experiencing sunset at Uluru, then back on the road to Alice Springs, Katherine and Kakadu National Park. Three nights in Darwin before flying back to Melbourne.
Student insights from previous tours to Kakadu:
‘The trip allowed us to see classic sites of Northern Territory like Uluru and Devils Marbles as well as places most of us wouldn’t even know about like Berri Springs’
‘King’s Canyon, which provided amazing views, interesting natural landscapes’
‘Three stunning waterfalls in Litchfield National Park, provided the perfect place to escape the warm weather for the day’
‘We visited historical and informational places, Royal Flying Doctors, Darwin’s Military Museum, Museum and Art Gallery’.
Italy
Having successfully travelled to Italy in 2015 and 2017, Warrandyte High School students once again travelled to Italy in 2019, visiting Rome, Milan, Cinque Terre, Florence, a farm in Tuscany, Sienna, Verona and Venice amongst the magical places experienced. During the trip students experienced three days of Italian language classes giving them complete confidence to order pizza and gelato! This amazing experience will again be offered in 2021!
Student comments from last tour:
‘Over all Rome was beautiful in a way that can’t be explained’
‘While in Florence we saw David in all his glory’
‘Venice, I think I loved Venice the most, no cars, scooters, motorbikes not even a push bike’
‘Italy was a magical place and I wish upon heaven & earth that I get to go back there one day!
Great VIC Bike Ride
Each year a group of students from Years 8-12 take on the challenge of the Great Victorian Bike Ride. This ride is an 8 day tour that takes in different parts of Victoria. It helps students to build self-belief while learning a lot about mateship and team spirit. Students train for the event throughout the year.
World Challenge
In 2014 Warrandyte High School went on its very first World Team Challenge. A group of twenty Year 10 and 11 students were chosen via an extensive selection process to go on the inaugural trip to Malaysia and Borneo. Students are required to plan, fund and ultimately lead their own month long expedition. During the expedition students will undertake project work in a local community.
2016 saw Warrandyte High School’s second World Challenge trip to Thailand and Laos.
The program is managed by World Challenge, a pioneering educational organisation with 26 years of experience in delivering personal development expeditions for students.
In 2018 another World Challenge experience this time to Vietnam was highly successful. We endeavour to next offer this amazing experience in 2021.
China
Every two years we offer our students a life changing experience travelling and studying in China. For more information, click on the “International” tab and then select the “Sister School” tab!
